Email attachments are opening in background on my MacBook Pro

Since a few weeks ago, when I click on an email attachment to open it, it opens behind the email, and then it is difficult to actually click on it to read it as the screen often flicks straight back to email. Previously, attachments would open in the foreground and accessed easily. I can't find a relevant setting to change.
