storage management and Photos library on mac

Hello, i have multiple apple devices linked to iCloud for photos back up, i brought a new mac book pro and i have linked my iCloud to the photos and that resulted in downloading the images of iCloud and of previous libraries on my mac and eating up more than 100 GB from the storage space on the MacBook, how can i reverse the process without loosing my photos on the cloud?
