MacBook Air M2 constantly tries to go to sleep

My MacBook Air M2 seems to believe it is in clamshell mode and constantly tries to go to sleep, finally figured out when I connected it to an external monitor. Won’t even show keyboard backlight without charger being hooked up. On that note, the trackpad, keyboard, and touch ID do not function currently, I am just using an external display with usb mouse and keyboard. I have no idea on how I should proceed and an Apple Store is hours away. Just before this occurred I was using my MacBook, only 3 hours prior with no issue.

Reset SMC (System Management Controller)

This resets power-related settings:

  • Shut down the Mac completely.
  • On your built-in keyboard (even if it’s not working right now), press and hold Control + Option + Shift on the left side, then press and hold the Power button.
  • Hold all four keys for 10 seconds, then release.
  • Wait a few seconds, then press Power to turn on.

If your internal keyboard isn’t responding at all, try this with an external Apple keyboard (although an SMC reset usually requires the built-in keyboard).
