When iTunes first came out I downloaded all my cd's to it. Made some playlists which I still use today. when I stopped paying for Apple Music this month, ALL my playlists have disappeared. These are not songs purchased through Apple, but my own cd's. why did this happen and how can I get them back.

If you were using the Sync Library feature of an Apple Music subscription to synchronize purchased music from your Mac to your iPhone, maybe when you stopped paying, the iPhone copies went away?!?
I would hope that the music from your own CDs would still be in the Music library on your Mac and that you'd be able to synchronize it to the iPhone the old-fashioned way.

Thank you for your help. I just decided to drink the kool aid and sign back up for Apple Music. All my playlists came right back. It ****** me off though. When I have time to play with it, I'll pick a different app that won't hold me hostage.
It shouldn't have deleted any playlists consisting entirely of purchased songs, in the first place.
As for playlists containing subscription songs – my understanding is that if you let your subscription lapse for even a short while, those usually are gone forever. You're very lucky if you got any of those back. Although I don't see why Apple needs to delete them completely in the first place – without creating even textual lists of songs that you could keep for your records. A list of names of songs and albums is not the same as the actual songs themselves.
