Unable to delete downloaded files on my MacBook Pro running macOS 12.7

Downloaded a file containing 70 documents from a trusted source. Need to delete the fold & files. Tried all the usual methods for deleting unwanted documents & folders but keep getting dialogue box from Finder asking for a password. I've put in what I believe should be the password needed but it does not work. Suggestions?

Just to be sure, I just logged out as user and restarted my computer. I was asked for a password to restart and put in the one that I use. The computer started as expected. I then tried to delete the folder/files and received the same 'need password' screen. I put in the password just used to successfully start the computer and the computer tried to process the password but them just 'shakes' back and forth - like saying 'no' or 'incorrect'. No error message is given. Should I get in touch with the sender of the folder to see if they had the file password protected? Also, forgot to mention, original attachment was a zip file which I opened. Would that make a difference?
