How do I fix weak, cutting guitar input on my iPad A16 in GarageBand?

For years I’ve used an irig to plug my guitar into GarageBand on my old iPad air2. Worked great. I’ve recently upgraded to an iPad a16. Since there is no phone jack on the new iPad, I’m forced to use an adapter. Now the guitar signal seems extremely weak and sounds anemic, cutting out early as if there is a noise gate on, even when I have the noise gate turned off. It sounds terrible, unusable. How do I solve this problem?
