How do I recover old photos from an iCloud backup from an old iPhone 7?

I backed up an old device (iphone 7) that hasn’t been used in a while, in hope of recovering the old pictures i had on that device only to see that they all deleted and the picture from my current device took over. i dont know what to do.

Recover an old inactive backup from iCloud Hi everyone, I am trying to solve a problem with my mother-in-law's phone (iPhone SE 3rd gen, iOS 16.1.2). She had another iPhone SE (2nd gen) that broke and she had to buy a new one. I helped her manage the setup of the new phone, and since the old one no longer worked properly, I set it up as a new iPhone instead of restoring it from the backup of the old one. By doing so, however, she loses the photos taken with the old phone. From the iPhone settings I can see the old backup (see screenshot attached): what I need to do is download the backup to the Mac and extract the photos so I can transfer them to the new phone and free up iCloud space. How can I do this? Thank you in advance. Alessandro

If iCloud Photos was and remains in use, and with the same Apple Account, then the photos are in iCloud Photos, or were deleted and are no longer available.

If iCloud Photos was not in use, you will have to restore the backup to an iPhone or iPad. (If there is any data you want to preserve on the iPhone or iPad, you will need to back that up before the factory reset and restore, fetch the photos somewhere, and then reset and re-restore the current backup.)
