How does iCloud Family Sharing work for new members?

When I invite someone to be a member of my iCloud storage Family Plan and they already have a paid plan, how does their stuff get moved over to the share plan? Do they first accept the invitation and then cancel their subscription, and does their content then automatically show up in the Family Plan share storage?
