I work at a public school. We recently upgraded our fleet of laptops to MacBook Air (M1, 2020s). With that we have lost our ability to print to HP LaserJet P1606dn printers. We have quite a few of these printers in the buildings and really don't want to replace them all. Is there a way that the drivers for these P1606dns could be made available in Mac OSx 15?

Driver support is always the responsibility of the printer maker. They decide what OS versions a given printer model will support. The last driver update HP released for that model was in August 2022:

Have you tried that driver?
That printer model has built-in wired ethernet. Are they already networked to the school's wired network? That may help they are.
You need to contact HP support. DO NOT look up a phone number for them in a search engine. Just this week there was a post here be someone who did, and fell victim to the "paid search-result placement" scam that search engine enable. He ended up with a scammer pretending to be HP gaining remote access to their computer.
