I lost all my personal documents after an update to Mac OS Sonoma. I am not sure how to regain the folder and the documents in it.
Please help.

You probably activated "Documents and Desktop in iCloud" without realizing it.
Open a new Finder window and click on "iCloud Drive" in the sidebar. Do you see folders named "Documents" and "Desktop" there? Are your files there?
I am not sure what to tell you. Where were these files stored? Inside the Documents folder? The Desktop folder? Somewhere else?
What is inside these same folders now?
Open your home folder by pressing Command-Shift-H.
Inside there are Documents, Desktop, and other folders. Check to see what's inside.
I can't see how an update would eliminate user folders or files, but apparently it happened.
I am guessing you do not have a backup... if you use Time Machine, it is easy to retrieve old content. Otherwise, I am afraid it may have been lost.

They were in my personal folder on the hard disk in my documents folder. This whole folder disappeared now. Not sure how to retrieve it.

Finder -> Settings -> Sidebar. Check the Documents option.
