Why does Time Machine pause during backups on MacBook Pro?

Whenever I back up my Mac, Time Machine seems to pause mid backup. It will back up the first 50 to 70% fairly quickly, depending on how much needs to be backed up, but then the last 30 to 50% will take 12 to 18 hours. And when I check on it during that time, it'll remain at the same percentage for hours and sometimes overnight. Then when I go to use the computer the next day, it will finish fairly quickly, even though it was still at 30 or 40%.

And I'm not allowing a computer going to go to sleep. I'm setting if not to go to sleep for several hours. But even though it hasn't gone to sleep, the backing up process seems to stall. I'm also normally not using it while it's backing up.

Why would that be? And this is an ongoing problem that's been happening for years through various operating systems upgrades.

Thanks,

Pat

I understand TM is taking a long time to finish a backup.

Review If Time Machine takes a long time to back up - Apple Support. Like most things about a Mac TM works best when it is ignored, but I understand it can be disconcerting or annoying when it repeatedly takes a long time to finish. One possible reason for that might be a backup drive that is functioning, but is nevertheless operating in a state of failure, so it would be instructive to obtain an additional TM backup drive and add it to TM. Besides, having one and only one backup drive does not comprise a robust backup strategy. TM will back up to as many drives as you wish to provide.

It is not necessary nor is it advisable to alter a Mac's sleep settings. Just ignore it.

Needless to say, if you are using any non-Apple "anti-virus", "cleaning", or "Internet security" products including "banking security", anything at all in that broad category of utterly useless garbage, don't. A lot of things won't work if you do.

Thanks John. The reason I don't ignore how time machine is operating, is because I like to put away my laptop when I'm not at home. So when I'm leaving the house, and it's not done, I have to stop the backup process to put away the laptop. In addition, I like to store my Time Machine drive in a waterproof and fireproof safe for safekeeping.

Having Time machine stored on a second hard drive is good idea. I'll try that and see how long it takes to back up to the second hard drive. Thanks.

Also, thanks for the info on the ChatGPT post here. Seems like someone's trying to look good, or may have some other ill intentions.

Thanks for that explanation. Of all the possible reasons for TM's slowness I think getting an additional backup drive will be the most expedient means of advancing troubleshooting. It can stall on writing to the backup device, reading the source drive, or both, or the trouble could lie elsewhere.

Time Machine troubleshooting can be time-consuming and tedious. If a new backup drive works well, it suggests the problems are isolated to the existing one, which we can address separately.
