How can I make my iMac stay logged in when I leave it alone?

I am the only one using my Mac. Must I put in my name and password after being away from my Mac? For instance I have a guest and I want to listen to my library music or view pictures on my Apple TV. If it's been awhile since I have logged in I need to run to my MAC to login. Is this necessary? How do I change it?
