Why did my iTunes podcasts stop downloading automatically?

New episodes of subscribed podcasts used to download automatically from the iTunes store to my iTunes library without any user action. Now I need to click on Refresh Podcast then look at the list of episodes for each podcast in my library. I then download any new podcast by clicking on the download button (the one with the cloud symbol) wherever it appears for a new episode.

How can I return to the previous happy situation?

Podcasts downloads disappearing My downloaded podcasts keep disappearing. It’s been happening for a while but today was the most annoying - I had to pause for a few minutes to do something and when I tried to resume the download was gone. Remove Played Downloads is off. I only use one device so it isn’t a synching issue. It happens to automatically downloaded and manually downloaded podcasts. How can I prevent this? I’ve seen this asked as few times but it’s never received an adequate response before the question is closed.
