.pages and .numbers filename extensions cannot be hidden since macOS 15.4

Unfortunately, most people don't report the problem they have, or they don't know how to do it. I don't know how Apple could then estimate how important the problem is for us, all of the macOS users, and assign the corresponding priority to fix it.

Not so for me. I've upgraded to macOS 15.6 and I'm still experiencing the issue as of August 16th.

It only happens to iCloud files, the files in my local Downloads folder are not affected - the file extension remains hidden after a file edit.

I have been using Bruno's work-around suggestion posted August 9th (thanks again Bruno) as it's a much faster way to remove the file extension that re-appears in Finder a day or so after editing a file.

Same thing happening for a while now. We have three MacBooks that share icloud files and use Pages everyday. We keep all of our MacBooks updated regularly. File extensions show up in finder even when Hide File Extensions option is not checked. It's annoying. :-)

Same for me. Issue still persists. I reached out to Apple again using my original case number, and they said they're aware of the problem but don't have a timeline fix. Maybe MacOS 26 will fix it... hoping, fingers crossed, Apple.

Ehhh, readability? To look at a list of numbers files with .numbers behind everyone of them is annoying to say the least.

Are you running any third party cleaning or anti virus apps?

does it happen in Safe Mode?

Might run an entrecheck report for us.

As an update, about 4 hours later I see the .numbers extension both in Finder and in Open Recent.

For my M2 MacBook Pro, I mean that I was looking at the same file shared on iCloud.

Bad news for me. After 3 days, one of the files that I believed fixed for good, has just showed its file extension. Very disappointing.

I have worked today with Microsoft Excel, and guess what . . . The file that was saved also showed its file extension maybe 5 minutes after it was closed.

It sounds like there might be a bug with the Finder display settings for Pages and Numbers files in macOS 15.4. You could try reporting this issue to Apple Support so they can investigate further.
