What causes Favicon issues on iPad Safari?

Dear Apple team, please fix the favicon issue on Safari, iPad Pro.

Many people report this bug: favicon icons on tabs are wrong, keep randomly replacing each other. Please DON‘T suggest clearing cash, website data etc: it does not help. Other workarounds like setting date ahead of time ans so on don‘t work either. And I am not going to waste time on resetting the iPad to factory settings because of a bug which will come back very quickly.

This issue has been around for YEARS. This is riduculous! Fix it or give us a way to manually clean favicon folder.

Presumably you refer to the Safari browser - and the icons associated with your saved websites and pages.

As described, you have a corrupted file that resides within your Safari cached data - this file containing the website icons that appear on tabs and the Safari Start Page. This file simply needs to be deleted from your cached data - a process that takes a few seconds to accomplish; this file will be automatically recreated by your iPad:

Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data - use the Search dialogue to find data for "apple"

Identify the cdn-apple.com entry; with your finger, swipe the entry to the left to expose the associated red Delete button. Delete this entry (and just the entry) from the list.

Having deleted the entry, you can leave the settings page - and restart Safari.

Thank you, your opinion is very important to us (c). FYI: one of the main Apple features has always been attention to detail and beautiful design. This is why I still pay for Apple products, although the overall quality has gone down over the years since Steve Jobs’ time. Yes, there are still people out there who care about quality and perfection — who care about style and class, and like their (expensive) things to work and look perfectly. If you’re not one of them, just ignore this question and don’t waste your time. As far as I understand, you don’t work at Apple (hopefully), and can’t offer a solution anyway.

Thank you guys, I have submitted feedback to Apple too.

It may be „cosmetic“ and irrelevant for some people but for others it is a major issue. I want to see my tabs and favicons displayed correctly. It is super irritating and distracting when all favicons are mixed up.

David M Brewer I am glad it worked for you. It does not work for many others (google „favicons wrong Safari“, „aggressive cash favicons Safari“). Favicon cash is stored separately from other website data in iOS. It seems easier to fix this error on Mac, but there is no access to favicon cash on mobile devices. These questions appear regularly for YEARS on support forums, but the bug is still not fixed. I hope somebody finally takes care of it.
