Why can't I update my iMac 2017 to macOS Sonoma?

I currently have Ventura 13.7.5. and it says my Mac is up to date. When I try to update my Mac on App Store, it says 'Update not found', the requested version of macOS is not available and to check if my Mac is compatible with the software. Though, in the App Store where it says get Sonoma, under the description it says it is compatible with my Mac. I have the iMac Retina 4k, 21.5-inch, 2017.

What do I do? I really need this update.

If the App Store is telling you that Sonoma is compatible with a 2017 iMac, there is a bug in the App Store.

I know that there are bugs in the "Compatibility" checking in the App Store, because I have had the App Store tell me that several of the 32-bit games I purchased for an older iMac are compatible with my Mac Studio. There the App Store seemed to be going by a simple OS version check with no consideration for the 32-bit issue. The App Store was happy to let me waste my time re-downloading my purchases only to then find that they would not run.

(I presume that you reached that App Store page by going through a link in How to download and install macOS - Apple Support – since Sequoia is the current version of macOS, and the App Store likes to hide older versions of macOS by default.)

P. S. – Make that, there are definitely bugs in the App Store when it comes to telling you which versions of macOS are compatible with your machine. I have a M1 Max Mac Studio that originally shipped with macOS 12.3 Monterey, and that cannot run anything earlier. Yet the App Store falsely assures me that Big Sur is compatible with my Mac (see second screenshot).

When I click on the Compatibility section for details, it suggests that the App Store is, once again, doing a test that is far too simplistic. ("Are you currently running macOS 10.9 Mavericks or later?"). If I tried to actually download or install Big Sur (which I am not going to do), I suspect that at some point, another compatibility test would be done by code that is more complete (less buggy), code which would then properly inform me that Big Sur is incompatible with my machine.
