I am getting a monitor with both an HDMI and a DisplayPort cable.
I will normally use the HDMI but can I connect the monitor using the DisplayPort cable and if so can I do it natively or will I need a plug adapter?

If it is a large display or wide screen display...
Then it would be wise to spend a little more on a high speed 8K USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 cable.

The supplied DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable will not plug directly into the Mac mini without using an adapter.
What I suggest is to get a better quality USB-C to DisplayPort cable, instead of using the supplied DisplayPort cable and a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter.
Note that only the rear-panel USB-C ports on the M4 Mac mini carry DisplayPort Alt Mode and Thunderbolt signals. The front-panel USB-C ports are USB-only and will not provide video signals of any kind.
It's a cheap 27" 4K Philips monitor and has just been delivered (along with an M4 mini) but as we have got guests I haven't had time to open and examine it.
The advert says it comes with an HDMI and DisplayPort cable so in a few hours I will see what the plugs are on the end.
Previously I have only used HDMI and USB-C.

I have had a few moments to open the monitor box and discovered that there is no DisplayPort cable included . . . its inclusion may be connected with the area one lives in.
Anyway it's no problem as HDMI should be perfectly fine as I will be doing nothing more strenuous than editing 4K at 25fps.
As I am not a gamer and have no intention of daisy-chaining multiple displays I can't see that a DisplayPort cable would add any benefit.

Macs do not support DisplayPort MST daisy-chaining. So that wouldn't be a reason to use DisplayPort on a Mac.
DisplayPort was not a consideration when I bought the monitor but I thought I had better find out what it was all about.
Anyway it now appears that it is superfluous to my requirements.
