Why does Pluto.tv work with other browsers but not Safari (using VPN)?

When I travel I sometimes watch live TV on Pluto with a VPN, but I have to use another browser because it doesn't work on Safari. I've cleared the cache and turned off Safari'scontent blocker for Pluto.tv, but can't think of anything else. It works on the phone app.

Ideas?
