iPhone 14 Pro Max stuck on 'Update finishing in background' after 18.4 update for 7 days

My iphone 14 pro max after updating to 18.4 still has a message after 7 days saying under battery Updating 18.4 is updating in background & will continue to update. I have restarted it but message remains. How much longer will it take. I noticed my iphone getting warmer and not charging to 100% and this is a new battery. If I go to General it says software updated.

I updated my iPhone on iOS 18.4 release date and also had that message up until today or yesterday. There really is no clear definition of how long the update processes take. This is mainly indexing where your iPhone organizes and creates a searchable database of your data. The duration can depend on how much data you have and background activity. Keep an eye on it and sooner or later it will go away when the update processes are done.

Whoa — if it’s been saying “Update finishing in the background” for more than 7 days, that’s definitely not normal. It should’ve been completed within a few hours at most. Something likely glitched during the post-update process.

You may try some of these steps, please check after each step...

  1. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
    1. Restart the device. That's it.
    2. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  2. If you're using a VPN, disable it and check if the error goes away. Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and turn off any active VPNs.
  3. Corporate iPhone Profile Check and Removal Guide
    1. Is this your corporate iPhone? Then please get in touch with the system administrator of your corporate
    2. If it is your device, do you have any profile installed by your corporate/organization/enterprise/School Management?
    3. Erase the profile added by you If you have installed a profile on your own --> Install or remove configuration profiles on iPhone - Apple ...
    4. Please contact the system administrator of the organization who provided the profile to you

I did notify Apple about my problem and was told that if in 24 hrs it did not go away they would escalate my case to fix the problem. Fortunately, when I woke up the next morning it was no longer there. Apple technical support was very helpful and kind. Bottom line was that depending upon what is on your iphone it may take longer for some phones than others. I was told to turn my phone off for 30 seconds then restart which I did but it was still there. Then I was told to keep my phone on the charger as that would help update it faster in the background. So I attached my phone to my charger and less than 12 hours later the message was gone. So that apparently did speed up the updating. Whereas, before I kept using my iphone during the day listening to my audiobook. Apparently, that must have slowed down the update in the background along with not being on the charger.
