Uploading altered music files to replace original files (MANY)

I'm trying to make all my music files the same volume when I upload them to my phone from the PC. This I'm doing by normalising all the files to the same level. No problem there as I have a Very useful editing program.

The Question is "How do I get the altered files uploaded to my phone to replace the files already there?

Is it necessary to do it one at a time or is there a way to upload in large batches or even all at once?

I really don't want to suddenly find all my special playlists are gone and have to be rebuilt from scratch.

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 18

It's in Settings/Apps/Music.

It's not perfect, but then again neither is the normalization that you're trying to carry out. The the mean and peak volumes in an encoded track don't necessarily equate to how the ear perceives the volume of the track, which can also depend on how it's recorded in the first place and then on all the encodings carried out between recording and ending up in your library. I've tried it a couple of times with a number of apps and never got it to work well enough to spend time processing a whole library. Unless you've got a decent app to do the processing which does some integration to take out inaudible transient peaks then you risk losing dynamic range in a lot of your tracks or just reducing their perceived volume so they sound quieter than they should.

As for uploading to your phone - if you're doing it via Music or iTunes then you need to edit the actual files in the Library and they will go to the phone the next time they synch.

I just checked and I have it already turned on, so I guess you're spot on saying it's not perfect, so I guess I'll continue on the path I've considered.

Now all I need is to find out how to get the adjusted files to upload and replace the unadjusted files.

Thank you for your help. It's very appreciated. I need all the help I can get as I'm not real good at finding the time to read through all the pages of instructions and I need someone like yourself who works with the app

Hi,

If you are editing files outside of iTunes then it won't normally have any reason to notice they have changed, and thus won't update the copy on your iPhone. iTunes should pick up the change if you play the track or edit some metadata. Alternatively I have a script called UpdateTagInfo that you may be able to use. Once iTunes is aware there has been a change it should know to copy the track to the device at the next sync session.
