iTunes not recognizing refurbished iPod

I'm trying to get a new (refurbished) IPOD set up on itunes but itunes does not recognize the new device

iPod connecting with iTunes I received a replacement iPod about 6 months ago from my local Apple store. iTunes will not recognize it. As soon as I plug it in a screen pops up reading it like a storage drive. Any ideas about what is going on?
