Thanks for all the comments regarding fluff in the charging port. To add to the conversation, I wasn't successful with a vacuum, soft brush, or bent paperclip. But when I tried the point of a long sewing needle, I was able to dislodge the big ball of hardened fluff that was causing the problem with inserting the charger plug!

Read my comment. The needle worked.
Using a pointed metal object is not a good idea. You can damage the charging port and may even cause a short in the electronics. A wooden or plastic toothpick is generally the best idea next time. Glad you were able to correct your problem.
I did try those other methods first. (Certainly, a ham-handed person could damage their phone with a sharp object, but a klutz can damage anything.)
However, in the case of my phone's packed lint, a gentle scraping with a sharp point was the only way the nap of the packed lint could be dislodged. When I could see a long enough fiber to grab, I pulled the ball out with tweezers.
When I successfully removed it, it was a surprisingly large, hard ball of lint.

If the charger will not stay in the port it means there is a gathering of dust in the charging port. My suggestion is you just clean it out with a tooth pick, be careful you don’t scratch the iPhone.

No worries. But it's usually a good idea to read past the first post of a thread to see if the Author or others found the solution.
Have a Apple Store or Certified Repair shop take a look at it.
