Can't stop mac mail from opening on start up

Hi, I'm running Mac Monterey 12.7.6. How can I stop it from opening (since I no longer use it)? I tried an older solution I found here which didn't work. When I open 'System Preference - User Groups, Mac mail is not listed as a start up app, so obviously, I can't use Command Q to stop. Any suggestions? Thanks
