I want to get rid of the boxes for several iPads and iPhones and other small products. Can I remove the plastic insert (if any) and recycle the boxes?

Since you're disposing of them anyway, I don't see why not.
But remember, your product and serial numbers are on those boxes. You may need to refer to those if an item is lost or stolen. Also, if you were to sell them in the future, buyers really like to have everything the device came with.
