I am having issues with Time Machine again. I am backing up my M4 Mac mini and this morning, I had an error saying that my backups were unreliable and that I needed to erase my backup history. This is getting quite annoying and frustrating. I am using a Synology Diskstation DS 224+ to backup too and this is done via ethernet. I am also using the latest version of Mac OS.
I have no idea what to do or how to correct the problem. Any ideas?
+1 on NOT using Synology for Time Machine backups, as stated they have a very long history of being unreliable and buggy. I'd recommend a dedicated External Hard Disk to backup to. What many experienced users prefer is the OWC Mercury Elite Pro due to it's high reliability, reasonable costs and the support of the vendor.
I have had two Synology DiskStations in the basement over the last 13 years and even with several Macs in the house, still do not use the Synology for Time Machine backups. Too many war stories in these communities over the years…
As others have suggested, I stick with Time Machine backups to suitably sized and local external storage.
+1 Use a local external HDD or SSD for Time Machine.

Time Machine has never been reliable with the Synology NAS. Never has been, never will be.
Use something else.
Thanks. That is what I am doing now. I tried to see if I could use the NAS but with all the things going wrong I have decided life is short and stick to USB!
