Deleting iPhone apps from iCloud

I used the top instructions to delete apps from iCloud. Alas, it deleted app from my iPhone; and the apps are still in iCloud????

Background. Bought iPhone 16 in mid-November 2024 and had problems while AT&T sakes set it up. ATT and Apple acknowledged the iPhone was defective, PROMISED a replacement iPhone FIVE times, yet did not replace until LAST WEEK. Apple Genius Bar tech, yesterday, said what is in my iCloud account since last November (also computer sync/backup) likely is corrupted. Therefore, start with new apps, etc. when I try to get an App from the Apple store, it defaults to iCloud download.

Suggestions welcome.

The AI instructions are only for removing App data from iCloud if any is stored there. Not all apps store data in iCloud and you will only see apps listed there that have data that can be deleted. Yes, AI gives the wrong information all the time. The actual app is not stored in iCloud. When you go to the App Store, the cloud picture just represents that it was a previously downloaded app. It is not being downloaded from your iCloud account, it is being downloaded from Apple Servers and you will get the most recent version of the app even if you had an older version previously.

  • Can apps be deleted from iCloud? NO
  • Can app data be deleted from iCloud? YES
  • The AI response is wrong with the question you asked because it did not take into consideration the word "data".

Your apps are not stored in iCloud. Apps can be downloaded again from the App Store (previous purchases are marked with the download arrow). I doubt that your backup is corrupted so you could easily just set up using the backup.

Thanks. I’m not sure why your advice differs from the Genius Bar tech support and the Apple instructions I had attached; not to say I don’t believe it. However, having lossy hours of hours of my time (lost l productivity, data, photos too) due to Apple’s taking four months resistance to replace the iPhone, there is no way I’ll risk corrupting the replacement phone. Which will be my last Apple product (I’ve had five Mac computers and four iPhones!!).

There were no Apple instructions, just AI assumed answers. Your App data may be synced with iCloud and can be deleted, but your apps are not saved in iCloud. A record of your purchase is maintained on your account so that previously acquired apps can be downloaded again from the App Store.

There is simply no information provided that would indicate that a backup has been corrupted; and that's unlikely. Whatever hardware issue you experienced is presumably now taken care of as well. Worst case, you would have to reset the device after setting it up using your backup and start again.
