getting same output volume levels of differently recorded sound clips

hi there,

i have multiple sound clips to be run simultaneously with a recorded video.

however they (the sound clips) are recorded in different decades, different voices, different instruments.... in short having different output volume levels. the output of some clips is normal, some is very high and some is very low.

is there a way or effect which can make all these different types of clips to have the same output volume levels for the listener?

thanks in advance for any guidance.

with HIS blessings,

iMac 24″, macOS 15.3

Without hearing your specific content, you could start by adjusting the volume levels of the clips to get them closer. If the volume of a clip varies a lot, you could try range editing for problem sections (hold the r key to select a range then adjust volume up or down) or look at applying a compressor limiter if manually adjusting would take too long.

Adjust the volume:

  • Press shift+⌘8 to display the volume meter.
  • Set the voice to around -6dB.
  • Leave a difference of 25 to 30dB between the voice and background music.
  • Adjust the clip display on the timeline to only show the sound waveform.
  • Add keyframes to the sound waveform to adjust it.
  • Reduce noise using noise reduction and voice separation effects.
