Sound from ext speakers while on hdmi with tv

I have a Mac mini that I use on my 55” tv. The speakers are good on the tv but I bought an ext speaker system I wanted to use while using hdmi for video. I tried the usual usb audio line but hdmi seems to trump usb sound card. Any ideas? Was thinking of trying 3.5 mm to digital audio since tv has digital audio in. Anyone ever tried that?

how can dvi and audio be output to a tv? I have a old Mac mini and I want to change the audio output (optical cable) to go to the same TV as the HDMI cable? There is an audio port on the TV. is this possible?
