How to transfer music from 1st generation iPod to iTunes?

I have thousands of songs on this ipod. is there any way to download this music to a cd, then to my itunes , or am i just out of luck and have to use this ipod till it dies.

Download iTunes on a computer that is capable to run the app then connect the iPod with a charger/data transfer cable that can plug into your computer and iPod, when eveything is plugged in use the itunes and and press sync to itunes
