Mac mini M4 suddenly stopped seeing optical drive

UPDATE: Problem solved. The cheap adapter to go from type A to type C failed. I used a quality adapter and the Mac instantly communicated with the drive.

Left the computer on for a while after successfully using the drive. Now it doesn't see it at all. Tried restarting both computer and drive. My keyboard is meant for windows so when I reboot and hold down shift, the computer does not go into safe mode. The optical drive reads discs. When I put a disc in, the drive runs like normal. The Mac does nothing when I put a disc in when the same disc used to autoplay.

Terminal drutil tray eject does nothing when it used to.

The optical drive does not show up under disk utility.
