Why won't my video on a thumbdrive play in Final Cut Pro on Mac but works on PC?

I have a home video on a thumbdrive that I want to add to my project in Final Cut Pro. When I open the video on my Mac, it won't show, but it will play on my PC. Is there any way of fixing this that won't cost me money?

Copy the video from the thumb drive to your system drive or to an external drive. Can you open the file from there in the QuickTime player? If not give some information about the tech specs of the media. Finder info can give basic information. For complete information use an application MediaInfo.

It depends on where this clip was created.

You probably can play it already on the mac using VLC, and maybe convert it using HandBrake (both are free).

But it would be helpful to know more about the file.

Start by selecting in Finder and press Command-I. Post a screenshot.

If you canopen with VLC and press Command-I there, you will be able to tell what codec it’s using and more. Again post a screenshot.
