macos time machine says plugged in "Backup drive not available"

Macos Ventura 13.6.7 - Toshiba 1T drive plugged in directly to mac mini not on a USB hub.

macos time machine says plugged in "Backup drive not available"


Toshiba drive does show up on disk top. Disk Utility had no problems erasing it.


What gives?

Was the Erased Toshiba 1 TB given a Partition Map ?


What format is the drive formatted as now ?


To use an external Drive for Time Machine Backup, it would be expecting an APFS / GUID Partition Map
