Music desktop app loses songs, playlists, and other anomalies

The desktop Music app (1.4.6.32) is still not working properly – several times I have created a playlist and I see it in Music, I have songs in it, but later it just disappears.

Other times I have a CD in an external reader/burner and it shows up in the Music app twice, even though there is no second volume on the CD, just music. If I eject one of them, the other ones still shows up as being there.

At one point last week, when my iPhone was connected by a cable to my Mac Studio, I checked the box in it’s finder window to “show this phone when on Wi-Fi”. Then I ejected the phone and disconnected the cable. Later when I thought that might be causing problems, I unchecked the box, ejected the phone, and yet afterwards, I see the phone is listed in the sidebar has connected. When I go back into Music, and click on sync settings to open the phone window, I see that that box has rechecked itself! And once again, I unchecked the box close the window, when I reopen it, I see that it’s rechecked itself yet again.

Most troubling, the issue of hundreds of songs disappearing from the Music app continues – I’m still slowly finding and re-adding some of the hundreds of songs that I noticed had disappeared a few months ago, but exist on the computer in the Music folder, which the Music app has lost track of.

And now, the problem persists– in the last three weeks, I ripped six CDs, including one just now, but looking for all those songs in my Library in the app, I see only two (discs worth) of them- one I did about three weeks ago, and the one I just did a few minutes ago, but all the other ones in the middle have totally disappeared from the music app, even though I see the songs in my music folder. This is really beyond frustrating – I never had this problem using iTunes, but ever since I have had to use the Music app when I got this new Mac studio, it just does not work correctly.

I have, of course, restarted Music many, many times, as well as restarting the computer several times in the past few days, but it does not seem to help.

Is there a way to just reinstall the Music app in case it is damaged somehow? I cannot update the OS to the latest version right now, as I have a software program that I use that will not run under Sequoia.

I tried quitting then relaunching music app, but it didn't give me an option to actually select the Music Library.musiclibrary. However, it did say:

I do not see any of my recently added songs back into the library, unfortunately. I did open the Music Library.musiclibrary package, but do not see any .tmp files in there. Based on the modification dates, it seems like the music app is using that file/package.

Thanks.

Press and hold down Option as you launch Music and use the Choose Library... option to explicitly reselect your Music library, normally at ~/Music/Music/Music Library.musiclibrary. There seem to be some circumstances where Music becomes connected to a cached copy of the library that doesn't update correctly. Close Music, relaunch while holding down Option+Cmd to open the library in Music's safe mode. This may perform some internal housekeeping which may also help. You could also right-click on your Music Library.musiclibrary package and see if it contains multiple hidden .tmp files. One of these should appear briefly as you make changes to the library, but otherwise there should be none.

Well, songs have never reappeared by themselves, so I guess not solved 😊.

The music library not shared.

Since it seems like I am using the correct library, not sure what rebooting the computer and manually selecting it in safe mode would achieve?

I have readded few of the missing albums, rerated the songs, readded them to playlists, quit the music app, then re-launched it and the song still appear to be there. I will keep an eye and see if they start disappearing again.

Thanks.
