Why does cursor order change when rearranging displays on Mac Studio?

My Mac Studio M1 with Sequoia 18.5.1 desktop setup includes three displays named y(1), y(2) and y(3). For the cursor to move correctly from left to right when changing from one display to another the displays have to be arranged as y(3), y(2) and y(1). If I arrange them like I want, y(1), y(2) and y(3), the cursor no longer follows the normal left to right order. This certainly not urgent, but it is annoying. TIA.

This feature is provided to allow you to place your displays in Space, corresponding to the way they are physically arranged on your bench.


The "Approved method" for arranging is so that the cursor will move across your displays in a sensible fashion.


in older MacOS, the control panel gave a much more visceral presentation that emphasized you were arranging in SPACE, not just in order:
