How can I change download settings on Mac mini?

New mac mini - When I download any file it will show as a .download. I have to Right click Show Package Content before I can open anything. Is there a way to bypass that and just download as the type of file I am downloading?

".download" files are partially downloaded files. It would appear that the downloads are not completing. Your browser should rename the .download file to its "real" extension when the download is complete. If that's not happening then the problem could be with your browser, the server and/or your internet connection. What browser are you using? And does this happen with a particular source, or all files downloaded from all sources?

In addition to MartinR's suggestions and questions, if you have anti-virus software installed on your Mac then I would suggest following the manufacturer's instructions to fully remove it. Unecessary anti-virus software could be attempting to scan your downloads and preventing or significantly delaying the browsers ability to complete the download. One additional consideration would be to remove any browser extentions such as download managers.
