I'm an educator working with film - I don't understand how long I've had to wait for a fix that doesn't require restarting my computer.
Has anyone found a solution besides restarting?

Have you seen where updating to the latest version of Sonoma helps?
I've only seen an M3 user claim that updating helps. Base on the latest release, when they posted, they probably updated to Sonoma 14.4.1 (MacBook Pro M1 2020 Skipping Video/Audio … - Apple Community and MacBook Pro M1 2020 Skipping Video/Audio … - Apple Community).
And the most recently reply on a locked post claims that Sonoma 14.5 still has the issue on M1 (MacBook Pro M1 2020 Skipping Video/Audio … - Apple Community)
FWIW, your Mac is out of date. Update to Sonoma 14.7.4 and test.
@vivelsa Did updating to the latest version of Sonoma fix the issue? And is your MacBook an M1, M2 or M3?
