App running in the background
I have several apps that will run in the background, but a number that will not, and I have tried all kind of tricks

With few exceptions, apps on an iPhone are suspended when they are not frontmost. The exceptions would be music, podcast and video apps. Which specific apps are you have trouble with? Have you tried deleting and re-installing them?
Sometimes, apps require that you are a subscriber for them to play in the background.
