Click here for information; in addition, post notices around where it got lost, and if applicable, contact the Lost & Found department of the facility involved.

The people on these boards are mostly other customers and can't lock it in any case.

If you did not have Find My enabled on your iPhone, it is too late to enable Find My on the iPhone now. All you can do is to hope that you had your iPhone passcode-locked with a passcode that thieves or dishonest finders do not know, and cannot easily guess.

In case you had it turned on, see:

Be aware that Apple does not get involved with lost and stolen iPhones. So if you get a message from "Apple" that claims to want to reunite you with your phone, it is actually from criminals or dishonest finders, who are hoping that you will help them to get into your phone or to access your data.

Also, if Find My was turned on, and you see a location, be careful about going there. If the phone was stolen – not merely lost – it would not be wise to go in person to confront criminals.
