I use the Canon LiDE 400 scanner with Apple's built-in AirPrint service via USB connection — without any Canon drivers or software installed. Works just fine on Sonoma through v14.7.2 and all releases of Sequoia. Hardware is a 2021 16-in MacBook Pro M1 Pro, and 2024 M4 Mac Mini Pro. I use a USB-A to USB-C dongle, though Apple's cable works just as well.

Setup is as simple as removing the existing LiDE 400 entry above, and then clicking the Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax… button. That opens an Add panel and all you need to do is click the LiDE 400 entry, take the default Use selection and click Add. That should give you an AirPrint-supported scanner. The scanner will be detected by Apple's Image Capture, or optionally with the paid VueScan Professional application (which I use).

Canon USA – Canon Support for CanoScan LIDE 400

If you select Software & Drivers, then choose macOS Sonoma v14 from the menu, the site offers two downloads:

  • U Scan Utility Lite Ver.4.1.2 (Mac)
  • CanoScan LIDE 400 Software Package (Mac)

The description of the first one says it works with AirPrint. The description of the second one says it will "install all the software you need to utilise the full functionality of your product."

If you select macOS Sequoia v15, only the first download (the one that relies on AirPrint) shows up.

Your choice. If Canon isn't supporting the scanner – and you don't want to pay for high-featured third-party software (like VueScan), then your choices come down to either

  • Going with the low-feature free or open source software (if you can find any), or
  • Giving up on that scanner

I just received my Canon LIDE 400 and connected it to MacBook Pro running Sequoia 15.1.1 and I can use it by searching for 'scanner' in Searchlight, then once found I can initiate a scan BUT I cannot get the Canon software Lite download to find the scanner. After it spins around it returns a 'no scanner found' or similar message. The Canon software might not be great, I just dunno, but I cannot use any of the buttons on the front of the scanner either like 'auto scan' or 'send' so I suppose I'm missing lots of features. Plus, I have to transfers scans into photos, then use that editor, bla bla. All very time consuming. Suggestions?? I placed a Syntech USB C to USB OTG adapter on chord provided. I also worked with a C to USB chord I have, but alas, never recognizes Canon software. Suggestions? Thanks if you can help.

Thank you for your reply but I am having no success.

I change to Sonoma 14 and clicked on the CanoScan software package, but only the U Scan Utility Light downloaded once again. Having registered the product, I see on the cannon site that it does support Sequoia 15., nevertheless, it does not download CanoScan, even though I clicked on it. Instead it once again so downloads U Scan Utility Light, which when I run the software once again it does not recognize the scanner.

I am beyond frustrated with this product and cannot find anything helpful on the cannon site. I can scan using the Image Capture since the MacBook can find the scanner but not the Canon software. I am not considering alternative software which seems a waste of money unless I select a low feature free or open source software. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I have just loaded sequoia and checked the canon site in Australia. The software IJ Scan Utility Lite Ver.4.1.2 (Mac)

have been updated for Sequoia. I assume that that is the same for international sites. Software was updated October 9th 2024. This is the software I use and it has all the features I ned, including scan adjustments, photos, PDF , scan to print etc. I cannot guarantee the buttons work, as I have never tried them, I always select from the software

Canon software IJ Scan Utility Lite Ver.4.1.2 (Mac) has been updated for Sequoia, late 2024 in

Australia at least, so I assume all other sites. It looks fully features to me with options for PDF, scan to print, photos etc. I have never used the buttons, as I select from the software, so I cannot guarantee the buttons work, though I would expect and hope they do.
