Why doesn't pressing the function key twice get the dictation to work?

Pressing the function key twice doesn't get the dictation to work.

The microphones work as indicated by they levels meter. Except, all that it types is the word "pet" over and over again. Weird!

Dictation is not working on MacBook I can use voice dictation on Word documents by using the Dictate icon in the Word menu, but it doesn't work if I use the Apple keyboard shortcut...I can hear the "dong dong" telling me that the microphone has been activated, but no words appear in my document when I speak out loud. Dictation stopped working macOS Monterey version 12 A few days ago Dictation just stopped working suddenly. This is now the 3rd time. The bell sounds when I double click the Ctrl key twice, but the microphone overlay fails to pop up and there is not movement in response to sound and no words are generated. I have to cold reboot for it to regain function. I just upgraded to 12.6.1 and it is working for now, but I fear it will happen again. How can I fix Dictation in case this happens again?
