Best way of organising my project in FCP

Hi guys,

We’re very lucky to be traveling full-time, and I’m putting together a film of our adventures. I usually use FCP (Final Cut Pro) for YouTube videos and reels, which are nothing more than 10 to 15 minutes long. However, this project covers 29 countries—or a large portion of them—with hundreds of clips totaling around 4.2 TB.

I’ve sorted and named each clip, and they’re organized by country, so I can find what I’m looking for quite quickly.

What would you recommend as the best way to put all of this together in FCP? I’ve created a new library and have already made 15-minute films on Scotland and Norway, which mostly consist of drone and driving footage with a soundscape. These used hundreds of clips, and I want to tackle Italy next.

What’s the best way to organize all of this without bloating the library or slowing my MacBook Pro M2 (2022) down?

All clips are stored on external hard drives, and I don’t import them when creating an event.

Easy...

First, there is no need to have just one library. You could have one per country or region.

Second, and just as important, you don't need to copy files to the library. Your files are already well organized. You can import using Leave in Place, wich makes your library point to the files' location, instead of bloating with copies of every file.

Third, don't optimize or create proxy media, and keep "background render" off.

All of these create huge amounts of data, which is unnecessary.

Q1: Are there folders categorized by country name? →Use folder name = event name.

which mostly consist of drone and driving footage with a soundscape.

Q2: Do the clip names have a common name? → Add keywords to common names. →Clips can be displayed by keyword.

Keyword: Drive

Keyword: Edinburgh

Keywords may not be necessary since the folder and clip names are already categorized in detail. I would like to introduce it just in case. If possible, please show a screenshot of Finder in list view.

A person who records his daily commute to and from work has been asked about file organization. In addition to using keywords, there is a method to classify each scene using markers. If you classify the clips by location/rainy/sunny/morning/night, etc., it will be easier to understand which scenes exist where in the clip, even after several years have passed.

⚫︎Would appreciate feedback on library/event/clip organization in Final Cut Pro
