Shared albums losing date taken

It would appear, that now that I have upgraded my iPad to 18.1.1, it now loses the ‘date taken’ (plus all of the metadata) when moving photos to shared albums. This was obviously part of a pre release on my phone as it used to happen when using my phone but not when using my iPad. Apple developers have got it wrong again. Making shared albums useless.

Apple strips the metadata from the photos in a Shared Album for security purposes. Otherwise there could be people identification, location, etc. in the files that others could use.

You can tell your grievances/preferences to Apple via Feedback - Photos - Apple

. If you need the capture date for the film you can add it to the image with the Markup feature. Also remember, sorting in Shared Albums is by the order they were added. So to get them in the order you want you need to add then in the order: oldest first.

Also remember that Shared Albums are free and so is the Photos app.

I share photos with family and friends and allow them to add photos, so for example Xmas 2024, getting present opening after Christmas dinner or even New Year celebrations is useless. My wife and I play golf and take swing photos of each other, we put them into a shared folder, if they aren’t displayed in the date/time they were taken then the holes wouldn’t match. Having the photos in the order they are uploaded makes the system useless, Also if I then want to upload photos of my family to my photo stream I would have to spend time adjusting the date/time so they are in the correct position. I have recently started uploading a lot of old Photos to iCloud Photos (currently stored on a local NAS). I’m going to have to rethink this and investigate alternative cloud options. This is the worst upgrade ever and would be the one issue that would stop me using iCloud for photos. Apple get your finger out and leave the date/time alone or at least give us the option to decide for ourselves by maybe having a toggle switch in the photos app setup. Meta data is the life blood of any photo app and stripping it out is a blatant disregard of the users data.

Shared albums are shared with people you select, so why wouldn’t I want them to see the date taken and the location. Pure big brother, thinking Apple know what’s best for us. If they really wanted to do something they should add a toggle switch for the app that gives you the option. Looks like I’m going to have to look at a different way to share my photos with family and friends (I pay a lot of money for iCloud so saying it is free is completely ridiculous).

So I ask again, what use is shared albums. I may be able to see the families photos but they will be in the wrong order, and I can’t copy them into my photo stream or anywhere else as they will be in the wrong order. If someone can get hold of the url and look at or photos, good luck to them, I’m sure they would love to see me and my wife playing golf or going to center Parcs with our friends. If Apple can’t make our photos secure without resorting to removing OUR data then they shouldn’t have given the shared album option in the first place. I am suggesting to my family that they stop using shared albums and I will investigate a (non Apple) altetnative.
