Glow Effect Before Moving from One Slide to Another…

I’ve never used Keynote (or PowerPoint) but I have to put together a presentation in just over a week (of evenings). The presentation is about Reverse-Polish Notation calculators, so I want to highlight certain buttons with a glow / halo effect around they key image to indicate that they’ve been pressed: the idea is to move from the keystroke slide to a slide showing the results of the keystroke. But I’d want some representation of the keystroke (the ‘glow’ effect ) before I move to the result slide. Below is a Pages mock-up of what I want to do:

These would be two separate slides, transitioning into each other: so when I move from the ‘ENTER’ slide to the ’4’ slide, the ‘ENTER’ button should glow before for a second, indicating that it’s been pressed, before moving to the ‘4’ slide, showing the result of the ‘ENTER’ keystroke. Is this even possible in Keynote..?

Sorry if I’m rambling, but any help would be appreciated… Keynote on Mac, not iPad, TIA.

Welcome to the world (nightmare? :) ) of Keynote transitions.

So many options, so many idiosyncrasies...

I took a quick run at it.. let me know what you think.

1 - I created a new slideshow with one slide containing two objects - one table and one 'button' (literally a rounded rectangle with the word 'ENTER ↑', but there's no reason why an image of the button wouldn't work). For effect I added a drop shadow to the box to give it a raised appearance, but mostly because my graphic arts skills aren't up to properly designing a button :)

2 - Right click on the slide in the sidebar and choose Duplicate to make a copy of this slide and change the text of the table and the button to the final state

3 - Select the first slide in the sidebar

4 - Select the Enter button object, then in the Inspector, choose Animate -> Build Out. Choose 'Pop' from the list of effects:

5 - De-select the Enter button.

6 - in the Inspector -> Animate, set the Start Transition to 'Automatically' with a Delay of 0 (this means the next slide appears immediately after the last object transition, rather than waiting for another click.

7 - Click "Play"

Hope that helps
