Certificate expired for Dodo POP server in Apple Mail

Just before Xmas 2025 I've been unable to download emails sent to my pop Dodo server on my Apple devices. I've been in contact with Apple, who told me to talk to Dodo. Dodo told me that Apple had changed its Mail settings and they couldn't do anything about it. Also that other pop servers had the same problem. I can read my mail on Dodo webmail if I have internet access and occasional emails come through, sometimes 2 days late, onto my iphone, Ipad & Macmini. I can still send emails from my dodo email server. Is this an Apple Mail problem and will it be solved?

The message I get from Mail is that the certificate for the server is invalid. When I ask for details I get a message 'Issued by E6' saying the Dodo certificate expired on 28 December. When I try to click that I trust the certificate, I get a message from Mail asking me to enter my password & update settings. But which password? I've tried all known passwords but still can't get in to update my Certificate Trust settings.

Same thing is happening to my sister and the guy from Dodo told her that dodo would be discontinuing their their pop settings platform for Mac computers and she won’t be able to use your Mac for dodo emails (have to access your emails on the webmail). And also Dodo would be sending out an email about this occurring. Apple was unable to get it working for her before she contacted Dodo. Sounds bizarre.

Closing POP email is another indication that ISPs (at least here in Australia) are walking away from providing their customers an email service. iiNet have ceased email completely (see here), and have transferred these email accounts to The Messaging Company for which iiNet users will have to pay extra if they want to continue the service. Dodo seems to be moving in that direction. Telstra is doing the same, and I am informed that Bigpond email account holders since late 2024 have been directed towards setting up a Microsoft email account because Bigpond email is closing.

Although you can rest a little easier now that Dodo seems to be offering IMAP email, it might just be time to consider moving away from ISP email. It's an awkward process but even worse if you have to do it all at once and by a deadline set by your ISP.

Today I took the drastic action of deleting my dodo account on both my iPhone and my iPad. I then shut down both devices and restarted them. Then I added my dodo account to both devices as a new accounts. I say drastic because I lost all the mail in my sent folders. Nevertheless, it worked! You’ve probably already tried this but it worked for me. Good luck!

What I did was go into keychain and put the certificate in there and then I could trust it.

I can't quite remember how I got the dodo certificate, but I think on the message that comes up there is a way to see the certificate. You should then be able to drag that into your downloads folder.

This is the bit that I do remember, once you have the certificate, open up "keychain access" application in "Utilities" folder, select "login" under "Default Keychains" and click on "Certificates", then from the "View" menu select "Show Expired Certificates", then you can drag the certificate into the certificates area.

It won't work if the format of the certificate isn't valid, which goes back to remembering how I got the certificate in the first place.

(Note you may be able to drag the certificate straight from where the certificate is visible in mail into keychain.)

Once the certificate is in keychain, you can then select "Get Info" on the certificate, and in the "trust" section you can set "When using this certificate" to "Always Trust" from "Use System Defaults".

Now mail should work. You are saying to trust an expired certificate, so that is one caveat on this, but you don't get mail otherwise.

Some of the responses here from dodo appear strange. That pop settings for Macs are going to be discontinued appears strange as pop is a mail access protocol used by all mail applications on all systems, it is not specific to a Mac. So they may be getting rid of pop access, but that would be for everyone.

The problem is that their certificate has expired and they have not renewed it. The certificate is not specific to mac and should be the same across all systems, but it is possible that the mac is unable to get the certificate from the dodo pop server for some reason, and that may be what they mean by discontinuing their pop settings for mac. If that is the case it would simply be a matter of getting the new certificate and putting it into your keychain.

Perhaps a matter of further research.

Ah, another bit of looking, I can see that dodo is supporting IMAP, which would explain why winnersq s actions worked, when the new account was set up Apple Mail will have enquired what protocol to use and dodo will have responded with IMAP and mail will have set it up using IMAP. It also says that POP3 is available, but not POP, so perhaps all POP access is going away.

Thank you. I’m not tech savvy enough to try it to be honest. It looks like I’m going to have to buy my own private email account. I can still send and receive my dodo emails if I keep logging into my account but that’s a bit of a hassle. And up to now my emails still come through on my iPad but I just cannot reply to them without going into my account.

Hi: My last email received from the Dodo Server through Apple Mail was 15/1/2025. Eventually, yesterday, I got fed up with logging in to webmail to read emails on my iPad. I was able to setup a new account in Mail, and following is the best that I recall of the steps taken.

Open Settings, find the Mail App, go to accounts section and create a new account.

Name - preferred name

Email - default dodo email address

Password - dodo webmail password

Description - do not use your current email account address as the account description e.g. webmail.dodo.com.au

Choose IMAP or POP whichever is preferred protocol

Incoming:

Server name - edit to say webmail.dodo.com.au

Security - SSL

Port - 993

Outgoing:

no authentication required

After choosing the Next button the verification process said something like “SSL could not be authorised” asked whether to accept all certificates, I selected to accept and selected continue. (This may make my system venerable, hoping a tech out there will know and advise. )

The new account was then verified and every email on the Dodo server came through to my new account. All 590!

I just need to move any of my outgoing emails and special flagged items across from the previous email account in the Mail App, then delete that old account.

Hope this works for anyone else who is sick of having to log in to their emails via Dodo Webmail from a browser, with no real assistance from Dodo.
