File transfer with ethernet cable not working

I have a 2023 Mac Mini, which replaced my old 27-inch iMac. When I first got the Mac Mini I was able to connect it to my old Mac 27 with an ethernet cable and drag files from it to the new one, using "connect to server". This now seems impossible to do (correct password is rejected or "permission denied" message). I presume this must be associated with an OS update on the Mini. Am I doing something wrong or is this just not possible any more?

Here is Apple's guidance for that process. It hasn't changed much and it isn't complicated.

You might start by rebooting each machine and then trying again.

Update - this morning it's gone back to refusing all attempts to connect. I wish I knew what I did right last night to achieve a connection. It just refuses to recognise the password which I've used for years (both the old and new have the same log-in password). I just get the "vibrating window" when I enter it (see screenshots)

Thanks for the reply, but I've been through all that before posting. It simply doesn't work, in either direction!

Actually it's just started working! After several weeks of refusing. I'm not sure what I did differently, will investigate further in the morning...
