iPad Sound Issue with External Bluetooth Speakers

I have a non cellular iPad that no longer plays any sounds. It is not in sleep mode, not in silent mode, volume slider does not work unless a external speaker is chosen as it no longer sees its own or any bluetooth speaker connected to it. Apple music has no sound or volume control when no output is set and i have restarted 4 times. Any ideas on how to fix this as i have read all forums back 3 years to see if anything was close and i tried most of the fixes with no luck.
