I want to buy a new iPhone through Apple, but I’m scared to ship my phone in the trade in box because I heard it’s easy to get stolen. The closest Apple Store is about 70+ miles away. I’m wondering if I’ll be able to turn my phone into Best Buy.

Not saying that Apple Support is wrong. Maybe your Best Buy is different, or things have changed recently.
The BB stores here would not accept the trade in. Been there, tried to work with Apple to do that.
When you take the phone in.......document everything, take pictures. take video, get names, get signed receipts, etc.
Find out whether Best Buy will be shipping your phone to Apple, or to a central Best Buy warehouse.

That is beyond surprising. A friend I know tried to do that recently and they were not able to do the trade at a BestBuy store, so do as everyone is advising. Document EVERYTHING. And don't come back to update us until you've actually received the trade in money on your Apple Account. Which is likely going to be fraught with issues.

Make sure the receipt you receive includes the device’s serial number.
