External camera(video device) recognition on the base model M4 Mac Mini

Hello guys,

I recently purchased the Mac Mini M4 base model and the MacBook Pro M4 Pro. While the MacBook Pro recognizes external camera and video capture device without issue, the Mac Mini does not. When I connect a camera and video capture device to the Mac Mini, it is not recognized by QuickTime Player or OBS. Even with Continuity Camera, only the sound options appear, but the camera itself is not detected.

I am wondering if this might be a hardware issue with the Mac Mini, but since I only have one unit, I cannot compare it with another device. If anyone who owns the Mac Mini M4 base model could confirm whether their camera works properly, I would greatly appreciate it.

What interface does this video capture device use – and how are you connecting it?

If it connects via Thunderbolt, keep in mind that

  • All of the USB-C ports on the M4 Pro MacBook Pro support Thunderbolt.
  • Only the rear-panel USB-C ports on the M4 Mac mini support Thunderbolt. The front-panel USB-C ports are USB-only and do not support USB4, DisplayPort Alt Mode, or Thunderbolt protocol.

If it is a Thunderbolt device, and it doesn't work when plugged into the Mac mini's front-panel USB-C ports, the solution might be as simple as plugging it into one of the rear-panel ones.
