iPhone No Longer Appears to be Blocking Emails or Phone Numbers

Brand new iPhone 16 pro

Fully updated iOS 18.2

Up until a few weeks ago, I could block emails and phone numbers on my new iPhone. I would see the red "blocked" icon on the emails in question and any phone numbers that were blocked reflected as such.

However recently, that is no longer the case. When I attempt to block an email, nothing happens and there is no indication that the action was successful. Furthermore, when I attempt to block a phone number, it appears to do so initially, but if I back out and then go back to the number's information/status, it reverts to "Block Caller" as the option (as opposed to "Unblock") as if the blocking action never took place.

I have been blocking emails and phone numbers robustly for a few years now as the number of spam emails and unwanted texts has risen exponentially over that period.

Therefore, I have come to two possible conclusions: This is a bug associated with the new iOS 18, OR I have exceeded the limit for the number blocked emails/phone numbers on my account, even though there is supposedly no limit at all advertised by Apple.

Yes I have already tried closing all applications and turning my phone on and off. I have also backed up the iPhone in question to my PC, reset to factory settings, and restored from back up, and the problem still persists.

This is a monthly reminder that Apple’s iPhone mail app still has an unpublished, uncommunicated blocked email/phone number limit.

To make matters worse, the geniuses over at Apple (in their infinite wisdom), still think it is a great idea that you only be able to unblock an email address/phone number one at a time (instead of in bulk) - and due to the lag, this takes upwards of 10 seconds each.

This guarantees that it will take you a significant amount of time to purge your list.

Meanwhile hundreds of spam emails keep rolling in every single day…

I already know how to block email addresses and phone numbers and I certainly shouldn’t have to add any of that spam to my contacts in order to block them when a quicker and simpler way already exists.

The problem here is that Apple advertises that there is no limit to the number of emails or phone numbers that you can block.

However, as of now, that is no longer true. There is a limit. The only question is whether it is intended or a bug.

As stated previously, I can no longer block any additional emails or phone numbers. But let’s say I unblock three of those on my “Blocked” list. Well, then I can block three others before Apple again cuts me off and prevents me from adding any more.

If it is a bug, then fix it because this is extremely annoying.

If it is by design, then first publicly say so - otherwise Apple is lying. Furthermore, if that is in fact the case, then Apple also needs to implement a way to unblock emails and phone numbers collectively in bulk. I literally have several thousands on my blocked list and I can’t stress enough what a major pain in the rear it is to unblock each one at a time. It is a slow laggy process that takes around ten seconds for each and every one.
