i just updated my phone to ios 18.2 this week and today i encountered something unusual. my phone is usually charged up to 90% only since i set it up that way. however tonight, my phone reached 91%. good thing i saw it immediately. is there any explanation to this? is this a bug?

i see. i’m just quite confused since i obviously set a charge limit and turned off optimized battery charging setting so it shouldn’t have exceeded the limit.
yeah, it does not happen every time but it does happen often this month. just now it ignored my 90% charging limit and went 91%. when i restarted my phone, it became 95%
Optimised Battery Charging is designed to reduce the wear on your battery and improve its lifespan by reducing the time your iPhone spends fully charged. It is available when Charge Limit is set to 100 per cent. When the feature is enabled, your iPhone will delay charging past 80 per cent in certain situations.

With iPhone 15 models and later, if the charge limit is 100 per cent, you can also turn on Optimised Battery Charging. Your iPhone has these settings by default.
Your iPhone will charge to within a few percentage points of your chosen limit and then stop charging. If the battery charge level drops more than 5 per cent while connected to power, charging will resume, again charging to within a few points of your chosen limit.
If iOS determines that a charge limit will help preserve your battery's lifespan, you'll see a recommendation. For example, you may see "Based on your iPhone habits, a charge limit of 95% is recommended to help preserve your battery".
If you have Charge Limit set to less than 100 per cent, your iPhone will occasionally charge to 100 per cent to maintain accurate battery state-of-charge estimates.

Apple covers that in several support articles. The algorithm has to update what 100% is. If it doesn’t know what 100% is, how can it stop charging at the correct level?
So, yes. That’s a normal expected behavior. It will not affect your battery’s performance or health.
It still needs to learn what 100% is to show battery capacity remaining on your screens in upper right corner. It’s normal.
But it shouldn’t be happening every time. There are lots of reports that on iOS 18.2, the charge limit is ignored and it charges to 100% every time.
The OP didn’t state it was happening every time. Let’s not create issues where one does not exist. If you’re having issues with some thing similar to the OP, please create a new thread.
